Joe Rogan interviews Ryan Holiday about stoicism
Read time: 2 minutes
Valuable lessons from Ryan Holiday about stoicism and its usefulness in our lives.
Ryan Holiday dropped early from college and started his career in Hollywood. Soon enough he quit because of the unhealthy lifestyle and toxic people. He then became an ambassador of the ancient wisdom and its philosophy, he even wrote 12 books, most of them about stoicism.
Aged 19, Ryan read “meditations” from Marcus Aurelius for the first time, he was amazed by how practical the wisdom was.
Note: Meditations was never meant to be published, it’s a personal journal from the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius himself. Pure wisdom in there.
Technology if used the wrong way is very toxic.
Emails and social media are productivity killers and we should all diminish our consumption of them.
Ryan does not touch his phone for the 1st hour of the day. It is an hour fully dedicated to him and his thoughts.
Build resilience for what people say on social media.
It’s easier for people to be mean behind a screen, it’s not the same in real life.
Don’t be moved by everything that is happening on your phone. It will help you stay sane and down to earth.
Authenticity has enormous benefits when building your brand.
The best advice is to not follow the trend, be unique and inspire people with what you have.
Organic growth > false authenticity.
Healthy competition or equality?
Struggles, poverty and difficulties have made many people work even harder to achieve their dreams. Those same people have inspired millions of others to grow and keep dreaming. We see a negative pattern of education from famous people’s children, whom suffer from mental issues and other illnesses because of lack of motivation and need.
It would be amazing if everyone has food on the table and a roof over his head but the competition has to be omnipresent, otherwise humanity will stop improving.
In an equalitarian society this would have been impossible. Even though, food and a house should be the bare minimum for all humans.
